Minton, Hutchison Strike Twice as Reno Sweeps Opening Weekend, 7–1

Saturday, October 17 — Reno Ice Raiders 7, San Diego Renegades 1

You'd think a team would learn its lesson after one night. Not San Diego! They came back Saturday and Reno did it to 'em all over again.

Jake Minton set the tone on the power play just 2:58 in. Then Charlie Montgomery. Then Roger Hutchison twice before the period was out — and it's 4–0 after one. Four goals in a period, folks. Four!

Into the second: Johnny Garrity on the power play, Minton again for his second of the night, and Weston Nash from Matt Robinson to make it 7–0. Dave Rosefield had seen enough after 40 minutes, and Vince Sorgentoni came on and slammed the door in the third — ten shots, ten saves.

And how about Justis Gyori in the Reno net? He had the shutout going until Peter Hanbury finally broke through with 1:19 to go, and I'll tell ya, that kid earned it. Gyori stopped 22 of 23, including the save of the night on Matti Lempiainen in the second.

Now here's what I don't like. San Diego took eight minors, and one of 'em was for head contact. We don't do that in this league. You go for the puck, you finish your check, you play it hard and you play it clean. That's old-time hockey.

Three Stars: 1. Jake Minton (2G) · 2. Roger Hutchison (2G) · 3. Justis Gyori (22 saves)

Weekend leader: Johnny Garrity, 2 goals and 3 assists. The champs are 2–0, and they look like they mean it.
